The Arhoolie Foundation's Strachwitz Frontera Collection is an archive consisting of over 125,000 individual recordings of Mexican and Mexican-American music on cylinder, 78 rpm records, 45 rpm records, 33 rpm LPs, cassettes and some CDs. The bulk of this material is from the years 1908 through the 1960s.
The Frontera Collection was founded by Chris Strachwitz, who began collecting Mexican and Mexican-American records, photos, record company catalogs and other resources back in the 1950s. His collection grew to be the largest of its kind, and is presently housed at the Arhoolie Foundation in El Cerrito, California.
You can look for a particular item or see a list of our catalog of recordings and images, which is searchable in the column to the right. This will allow you to view the contents of the archive. Note: this database is not a complete discography of the music, it only includes what we currently own.
In an effort to preserve and make the collection accessible, the Arhoolie Foundation formed a partnership with the University of California at Los Angeles. Through their Chicano Studies Research Center, the UCLA Music Library and the UCLA Digital Library, the 78RPM recordings in the Frontera Collection are now available to view and listen to at: http://digital.library.ucla.edu/frontera/
